Another Ebay Laugh

Yep, over on the N Gauge Forum we were just discussing the price being asked for some of the N gauge items, like £736 for a multiple unit for which £136 would be more appropriate. I did actually message the seller enquiring if it was a typo, but they have other items at similarly over-optimistic prices. No response yet.

I just bid on the red powered one, together with the blue trailer for 370,00 €, including 30,00€ postage. Will arrive from Austria next monday to Wednesday.
Okay the powered one comes without the box, tracks and transformer, but I wanted the set of both cars. As well I bid in April 2017 on three blue trailers and got them for 357,94 €. I was thinking to make from one blue trailer a powered one. Than I would like to illuminate two of these cars.

Free postage - to the more populated areas of mainland UK - sweet nothing doing for the rest of the populace.

Personally, I find these postal restrictions more annoying than sellers' lack of brain cells! Obviously sellers like to maximise their profits by expending as little time and energy as they can get by with.

It will probably keep getting relisted at this price as well:banghead:

I think I've worked out what this seller is up to - selling items that are on Amazon for a (much) inflated price!
If someone buys from him, he just orders from Amazon and gets it shipped to the customer.
Clever business idea that relies on mugs who don't shop around!

Ebay

So, the Merchant of Venice!

And we thought Lgb were trying to blag collectors. Clever? Opportunistic and avoid with a barge pole I'd say ;)

Well I'll be ! They don't post to the USA. I'm not bidding then..........I ran across one of those outrageous Ebay auctions the other day. I think it was a Bachmann box car. Great price but the shipping, from not too far away, was ridiculous.

Yes, this had also been spotted over on the N Gauge Forum. Mind you, for the items I looked at even the amazon price was excessive, and hence this ebay seller's prices literally doubly so!

I think with eBay, and similar sites, people think as it's an auction site they assume they are going to grab a bargain. This was probably true at the beginning, a nice easy way for folk to offload their unwanted goods, but now people h use it to run their businesses, it's just another shop. Shame really.

Why is that a shame? It's another useful source of stuff.

Yes you are right, it is a very useful market place. What I was trying to say, was that there's always someone spoiling things by asking for too much or selling shoddy stuff, which ruins it for everyone

Well it's a mixture of both really. There are shops but also individuals like us who need a place to buy and sell stuff at non-RRP prices.

As always, caveat emptor - let the buyer beware - whether eBay or anyone other individual or organisation selling you anything.

I did once ask a seller a question via the eBay "facility" what the justification was for setting a price that was so much more than could be found elsewhere (I gave them the benefit of the doubt and assumed there was something special about the item). Response? A big fat zilch. I was told by a regular eBay buyer/seller that by not responding the seller avoided my Q and their A being posted on the item listing.

In the end I didn't buy - found the same thing as a secondhand item at a retailer.

As Dutchelm just posted, doing your homework is key.
