Annie inside to outside frame ?

I'm about to embark on a major kitbash of 2 Bachmann Annie chassis to provid the basis for a 2-6-6-2 Mallet configuration. While I can live with them remaining in inside frame configuration I would like to get them to an outside frame look much like the image below -

Having got 1 of the chasssis fully disassembled I have already worked out how to get the cylinders back 67.5 mm to get a more compact unit with everything still fitting. But the icing on the cake would be the outside frame bit. Anybody tried it ? Thought some Connie counterweights might be a starting point but I might end up with a "too wide " loco.

Your thoughts please (apart form confirming my insanity). This is a long term project. Max.

The difficulty is likely to be axle length, as you need sufficient clearance between the outer face of the wheel and the motion.

I scratch built an outside frame chassis a few years ago, using steel bar for the frames, Slaters wheels from GRS (intended for the L&B 2-6-2, and motion from GRS also intended for the L&B 2-6-2.

The counter balance weights are cut from styrene with the aid of one of a radius cutter (cheapo from Maplins) and then attached to the Slaters outside cranks.

Have fun, and keep your sanity :laugh::laugh::laugh: (there is no emoticon for men in white coats)

It looks to me as if Wod's chassis has some form of equalisation which mine lacks.

Mine suffers from lack of adhesion under severe conditions as a result.

I'm currently experimenting with 7mm scale sprung horn blocks on my 0-6-0 diesel. if successful, and if my sanity has not improved, I could be tempted to re-visit my chassis.

Thank you Woderwick. Very usefull stuff there. Now bookmarked.
Rinochugger, I have the GRS L&B 2-6-2 and it occurs to me that a look in the direction of Slaters might be in order. Thanks for that. Hope you get your sanity/traction issues sorted.

Max.

My understanding of the Slaters wheels for the L&B 2-6-2 is that they are only available through GRS. I have never been able to find them on the Slaters website. GRS also stock them in 32 mm gauge - and that's another tale :thumbdown:

Can I just ask, what motor/gearbox did you use? That looks like a neat job

Rik

The motor is a Buhler 7 pole (can't remember the model number but Brain Jones had them going cheap) and the gearbox is ABC. Brian sends the motor to ABC and they mate it to one of their gearboxes :thumbup::thumbup::thumbup:

Thanks
I assume this is the ABC you mean.
