A while back another modeller sent me a pair of Aristo diesel bricks in trade for me building him a rail motor. A little later another guy sent me some more diesel parts. I didn't know I needed a diseasel, but I guess I can take a hint.....
A section of Aristo U25 hood and a B'mann Big Hauler cab was to be the beginning

cut off the overhang, and....
P1010002.jpg

Since the truck frames were Alco, the hood section was Alco, I looked for an Alco prototype. I couldn't find a close match to what I had, but I found a few that were close enough to be cousins....

The 'front porch' on mine is 5 scale feet from grille to railing. A bit goofy looking, but needed to clear those long wheelbase trucks.

Offset rear cab door is a later GE styling, but I thought it looked cool.
P1010006.jpg

Frame is built up from 4 main sections spliced. There is also a .020" x 2" brass bar bridging those joints for strength

Minimalist controls and a 'bus driver'
P1010010.jpg

Aristo smoke unit, aftermarket bell, wire ladder, rear mounted fan. Many early Alcos like the HH660 and 50-ton had the radiator mounted right in front of the cab.

Alco HH600 minus the sheetmetal

Since I didn't have the original truck bolsters, I made my own....
P1010003_01.jpg

The trucks are mounted to the chassis with a 1/4" bolt. It sits a little high, but I'm not sure how I'm going to lower it yet.
P1010004_01.jpg

I decided to raise the cab 3/16"... I think it looks a bit less ....squashed.

Other side...

Still to do: wiring, weight, rear pilot and steps, front coupler, railings.....

Fine, fine work. It will look like a real workhorse and fit like it was a prototype.

The best backstory that I could come up with is it was built in 1946 as an export type for US Army use in occupied Japan. (Alco narrow gauge traction motors are different than their SG ones) It met with an accident while being readied for loading onto a freighter - perhaps a cable broke - destroying the cab and badly damaging the bodywork. Bad enough that the Army refused to take delivery. Alco took the insurance money, and turned the wreckage over to a salvage company. Who, instead of cutting it up, rebuilt it using a cab from a scrapped steam locomotive. It was then leased to the reluctant AV as a 'temporary' replacement for one of their 2-8-0s in freight service, while the connie was being rebuilt....

And we all know that there is nothing as permanent as a temporary solution....

Thanks for the kind words. and I do have progress pix:
An antique iron pulley that I accidentally broke came in handy...

But we all know that no kludge is EVER complete without duct tape!

A bit over 5-1/2 pounds is about what the Aristo FA1 weighs, isn't it?

A brief road test

However, it doesn't like the current state of my trackwork.... I need to go after another bucket of boney.

Anybody got ideas on how to make it belch heavy black smoke and sparks like an Alco?

Let's see... only 4 months of procrastina-, errrr, parts acquiring hiatus? Not a record, but pretty bad.

Navin at Aristo-Craft didn't have a set of RS-3 pilot steps, none showed up on fleabay, either. so I had to fudge a set. They are a bit narrower than the factory ones, but better than nothing - Besides I needed a larger opening for the truck mounted coupler, anyway.

P1010002-1.jpg

Ray Webster sent me some of the stuff I needed - from Canada!... so a real big THANK YOU!! to him.

One of those things was a USA smoke unit - rather than remove the Aristo one that I had worked so hard to make fit, I scavenged the fan and cast well and made up some ducting.
P1010004-1.jpg

The other thing Ray sent was handrail stanchions - Yes I know they are mounted 'wrong', but the walkway was too narrow for 1/24 the correct way. I attached them with contact adhesive, so they should give rather than break.
P1010005-1.jpg

Some 1/16" brass rod, and it's actually starting to look something like an Alco/GE road switcher.... maybe

Nice model. Those hand rails really lift it.
Love the ballast weight - good lateral thinking!

Well, Kim sez I have to help clean up the house for tomorrow, so this thing is as done as it gets for a while. I still meed to put on a front coupler, and detail the rear pilot beam.
