Kero Lights?.

Having decided that I need a few Kero lanterns I decided to buy some. Yes well we all know where that went? The prices were through the roof and they had incandescent globes in them?.

If you really need it you make it yourself so I made some masters. These will be made into silicone rubber molds as soon as more rubber arrives from ALDAX.

The LED?s will be cast integrally and I?m toying with the idea of using flickering leds to try and imitate the flickering flame of a kero lantern?.. The handles are only there for illustrative purposes and will be individually fitted to the resin castings.

The Hurricane Lanterns is in 3 bits. The lens will be cast in clear material with a 3mm led embedded in it and will look good illuminated at night adjacent to the ?road-works? or hanging outside in the depot and per way yard?.

The square one is to be carried on all the trams as an emergency lantern and will also be used as a tail light on the steam tram trailers.

I can use any colour LED in these I wish but that depends on the final use.

You could probably sell these on G scale Forum. I hope that is the intention. I'll have a few if it is. Absollutley bloody brilliant mate

I could sell them here, I probably will..... But if I put them up on ebay some dapper little Chinaman will see them and will rip of my design and sell them for half what it costs me so they would end up cheaper to the consumer.... Bachmann already sell them in a similar style but they are non working and cost $10 ea plus $23 postage to AU....

So my shrink keeps telling me..... But this is all your fault, you sent me off on the tangent looking for flickering leds and having found them now I need a "proper" use for them....

I was going to hang the hurricane lanterns inside my steam tram trailer.... But then I was sent this pic of an authentic pre electric light..... I think I'll fly in the face and still use the hurricane lanterns...

I could sell them here, I probably will..... Use their industrial espionage against them. You do the R&D and LET them rip off the design, that way you don't have to pay for the tooling up costs to get cheap chinese production. ;-)

True... and I suspect that they won't be a great seller here anyway.... Ill have some production units ready in a while so I'll post pics and see how many are wanted by forumites....
 
Here are the first prototypes.....
The tail light/marker light pleases me, so much better than the commercial ones with a globe sticking out of them. They can have bi/tri/ any colour led in them, I can't seem to source a red and white led though.... The hurricane lantern is problematic in assembly after casting as the clear lens shrinks slightly more than the base and has to be worked into the register for it....
Both give a pleasing effect, the hurricane does need a clear LED in it though so if a red light is needed a clear red led has to be inserted.....

What are they worth?? How many can I put you down for? What colour do you want? The tail light leads can be carefully bent so that they protrude directly behind the led if they are to be mounted on the back wall of a wagon...
Maybe wait for the master class and make your own?????

Do they come as (or can they) a kit?
What sort of prices are you asking?
I believe they are resin castings, is that correct?

No they don't come as a kit BUT I could supply you with a mold and you could make your own...
As to prices.... I will have to "amortise" it out... I'm thinking around AU$10 ea same price as the Bachmann ones but these are nicer and they work.....

Seriously, that's about UKP£6 which is reasonable. must adnit I had been dazzled by the product and not noticed your location. :-)
Idea of moulding my own sounds interesting.. Would this be the same resin(s) as we used to make paperweights full of dead things many years ago?

and tinter, with these I can mix just about any colour I need except metallic;
