I want to get hold of some 3in1 motor oil, not the multi purpose oil but the oil which is rated SAE 20, the company which imports 3in1 oil to britain says they don't have any plans to import this particular oil.

It is readily available in the USA, would anyone over there, or anywhere else its available be able to send me some.

I have check here and it is a product permitted to be sent by regular mail here and from overseas if unopened and sent in a sealed bag and marked fragile.

Thanks for any assistance.

If the brand isn't important Morris Lubricants of Shrewsbury make and stock a wide range including an SAE 20.

Just goggle SAE 20 motor oil, lots of alternatives to "3in 1", unless you have particular reason for that brand.

Or if you want original 3 in 1 3-in-1 Oil Drip Can 200ml

The name will cause confusion...

Over here, "motor oil" normally means gasoline or diesel oil for a crankcase...

The 3 in 1 stuff is heavier bodied and they advertise for "electric motors" and specifically on the motor shaft...

So, different intention, using same name...

From their site (bolding from me):

3-IN-ONE Motor Oil is a SAE 20 special blend of high-grade oils engineered for 1/4 HP motors or larger. This long-lasting formula is great as an electric motor oil and lubricant, and can also be used to maintain sewing machines fans, drills, lawn tools, and more.

The ordinary 3-in-ONE oil is no good for lubricating our trains, that's for sure!

I think this depends on the material, I certainly would not use either the "classic" or SAE 20 3 in 1 on plastic trains, however for lubricating the mechanical movements on live steam, it is probably okay.
I was led to believe that 'standard' 3 in 1 contained 'varnishes' (?) - Probably OK for oiling-round, but certainly not for anywhere getting appreciably hot..

Steam oil for hot-ones, and something a lot lighter (and plastics friendly) for our electric mice!

Most of the guys in my local live steam group when I was a regular visitor used SAE20 on moving parts like axles of connecting rids etc. But NOT repeat NOT in the cylinders, this is the place for steam oil.

The forumulation of 3 in 1 SAE 20 is not the same as crankcase/automotive motor oil SAE 20... only the viscosity rating...

This is the point. About 20 years ago in the USA 3 in 1 was popular, now the consensus is that it gums up over time and is not suitable.

Post #9 shows a link that informs it is SAE 20 electric motor oil!!

Its okay around the garden, but I would not use it on my trains

Yes there is a difference between Fractional Horsepower mains electric motors and the tiny motors in our locos!

Here in the USofA the ordinary 3-in-1 is in a red can. My local hardware store carries "turbine" oil, which is designed for electric motor bearings in sizes from small to large. I used to use it on all my model moving parts - still have one in my live steam travel kit.

3-in-1 makes a similar oil in a blue can called 'motor' oil. I'd be happy to mail a blue can to anyone in the UK who can't find something similar.

However, I now have a bottle of synthetic oil on my workbench, which is now the preferred type. Don't ask why - maybe the hype and maybe the convenient bottle! Several model suppliers also sell this stuff.
