Hi folks, nearly at the "paint" stage for my steam loco project. Rather fancy a light green, similar to the locos in the links below- can anyone suggest anything from e.g. precision?

I'd rather have a dull or satin finish (as opposed to gloss or matt) and would really like spray paint.

or a bit greener...

or, a bit lighter!

The other option is a very dark, almost black green. Most of these I've found seem to be for military modellers and hence are matt, which is a bit dull.

The last time I was at Wilkinson's they had a "washed out" green spray paint with a matt finish. I don't recall if it was their own brand or Plasticote.

Hello, Matt

I knew the Roker and Consett Iron Company locos fairly well in their later (and retired!) years. What I can tell you is that both the shades of green as seen in the photos you have supplied are very, very faded, with the virtual disappearance of the top coats of varnish traditionally applied to these engines 'in the shops'. I was responsible for the day-to-day operation for a while of Lambton, Hetton and Joicey Collieries No 14, a RSH 0-4-0 shunter, on completion of its restoration, and if anything- and I hope memory does not play me false here - it was a Brunswick-like green ex-shops.

If you're going for an ex-shops look, then perhaps a darker green, varnished, is worth considering.

Regards,

Alec

Ohh, do you have any photos/ stories Alec? I find them fascinating.

The intention is to respresent an engine at the very end of it's working life, with faded paint and heavy weathering; Mel on here has said he'll help with the weathering. So ideally I'm looking for a lighter shade. I'll take Doug's advice, and also try Wilkinson's- I hadn't thought of looking at "household" metalwork paint, just automotive which tends to be a bit shiny.

Had looked at Railmatch but most seem to be either too bright or too dark. I'm just fussy!

Hi Brian
I spray painted the inside of my Rotary Snow Plow with Holts Foad car meadow green.

Matt,

I have somewhere an archive photo, in black-and-white, of LHJC No14 in service at 'the pit', that may be of help to you, and I will see if I can find it. In the meantime, I attach a 2001 photo of the restored Harton Colliery (South Shields) electric loco on its inaugural run at the Stephenson Railway Museum on Tyneside. Again, this is unsurprisingly in ex-works condition but the shade of green is of interest. An engineer friend of mine returned the loco to running order and powered it for the press run by means of huge traction batteries hidden in the open wagon behind it - a 12" to the foot version of the battery-powered activity we see on this forum from time to time.

Before weathering commences on your own loco, I would recommend that you have a look at Industrial Steam, published by Ian Allan in 1994 (ISBN 0 7110 2230 5). This is a full-colour album of a huge range of hard-working locos at sites across the UK - they cover the field from virtually all rust to ex-works finishes. And they weren't all neglected and care worn....

All the best

Alec

Matt,

Found it!

This photo shows LHJC No 14 in its working life somewhere on the Lambton, Hetton and Joicey Collieries system on the east Durham coalfield. I can only hazard a guess that the picture was taken in the early 1950s but it could be much earlier and pre-nationalisation of the coal industry in fact.

The picture is North of England Open Air Museum Neg no 18956.

Kind regards

Alec

Wonderful, thankyou Alec!

I've actually just given in to temptation and gone and bought an airbrush... so will be able to use the huge range of Humbrol etc paints. I've managed to find a light pastel green I like so will probably use that. I'm not actually trying to represent a colliery engine, it will probably get lettered for a fictional Plymouth harbour industry; I just liked the livery as something a little different.
I shall have to look out for that book- sounds right up my street!
