I use a pole sander wth a scotch brite pad attached to it. Not sure what it is called over your way but its the stuff you use to wash dishes with. Not the sponge but the rougher ones used for the tough crusty food. The LGB cleaning block works well but harder to attach to a ppole sander. You can also use the finest sand paper that attaches to the pole sander. I only use that when I have not run for a while.

Personally I would not recommend Sand paper. If you must use any abrasive material (paper) try Wet and Dry finest grade you can get.

However I have spent a fair part of the day helping to clean a large G scale outdoor Railway. It was a real pain using the blocks that were supplied. On my own line I cleaned around half the amount of track that was done today in a quarter of the time with an LGB Track Cleaning Block. You can also get new pads for these from Massoth.

So after all my hard work I know what prefer, oh and by the way I have been trying to get the owner of the layout that I cleaned today to get LGB Cleaners with no avail. He does however have the LGB Track Cleaning Loco which is used for inaccessible tracks only. These are very good on LGB Track, but not quite so good on others. We have mangled a couple of Aristo Points with this loco.

do Not use sand paper!! or even wet/dry paper which might be ok in a 3000 grit but it will glog up in seconds even when wet and rip very easily the scratches imparted by the sand paper will fill with dirt and make matters worse. Use the LGB track block or buy a track cleaner. I used a LGB block for years it cleans very quickly with out too much elbow grease.............

I bought the Aristocraft track cleaning car 4 years ago. I was expensive but didn't do the job I wanted. I then bought Norms track cleaner : http://choochoostuff.homestead.com/NMSTC.html . He has some great stuff but postage rates make it uneconomical to send to Australia It was in the same class as the Aristocraft where it kept the already hand cleaned track basicially clean - but not good enough.
I then used to use the wet & dry paper which cleaned the tops of the rails to a shine. I eventually bought the LGB track cleaning block & it certainly will do the job.
The problem is that my early Aristocraft & Bachman trains would "shudder" & will stall at times. It seems the earlier trains seemed to loose there electrical conductivity in the wheels after a while. They seemed to wear shiny coating off them. I would spend more time cleaning track & wheels even when running trains.
My LGB trains will run for ages before tracks need cleaning. I think that not only the "shoe" on the train helps power pickup but also cleans the track.

Also I will give another tip for all beginners. ---- Never run your best train on the first run around the track for the day.
I found that even after inspecting the track the train will find something that you missed. If you use your not so good train & you hit something or derail, it saves damage to fine parts (whistle, bell, lights, etc.) My track is 4 foot high in places & in early days of track construction a few falls were labour intensive for repairs.

Hi Steven,
you could try surgical spirit for your wheels.Just a drop applied on a fine artist paint brush. Can also use between blades on points or stubborn dirt on track. You can get a bottle at most pharmacists.

I use the track cleaner blocks sold by GRS (http://gardenrailwayspecialists.com/docs/83.asp#_Toc177208925 ) to which I've added a broom handle.

[/align] Once I've de-gunged the track with this (about an hour's 'scrubbing') at the start of the season an LGB track cleaning loco buffs them up before the start of a running session.

hi andrew....u got point!!! yes tht right never know if run yr train on 1st run...it mite derialment, fallen over,etc!!!!...tht why i alway use dummy locos make out of wood so i can push it all around the tracks to see if more room, space and flangeway....when i m repair or doing the job on the tracks, rockery, side wall, tunnels and aslo covered bridges....
so tht why i have to make covered bridge and truss bridges to stop fallen over,,,,,,,,my layout is above my waist line...

so aslo covered bridge nxt to fish pond..coz never know it might fell in or whatever......

so here is the photos of covered bridge...
