Yellow's a very weak pigment mate. It always seems to be difficult to get yellow to cover evenly, even more than white for instance.

Yes, I used light grey primer Don, but the yellow still didn't cover very well. I'm going over the light grey with a very light buff/stone colour now and the yellow seems to be OK on that. Just needs plenty of thin coats. So it will take a while, but I'll get there.
I feel I should point out at this stage that the idea I've got in me head (somewhere) is that, while the crane is a fairly new piece of kit for the WGLR (although it will of course get a light weathering), the tool van is a former revenue earning van that's passed into departmental use and probably spends most of it's time sitting in some weed strewn siding out in all weathers. So it is intended to be a bit of an exercise in flaking paint, rust and general decreptitude.
Having said that, weathering isn't really done in order to hide a rubbish paint job, so it needs doing properly to start with.
I'm also trying to do all of this while trying to get S****horpe United through the play-offs on LMA football manager. No wonder I've got paint on me suit. Who says men can't multi-task?
Edit - the forum doesn't like the name of a certain town in North Lincolnshire!

I have only just seen the posts about yellow paint.
I have used Halfords yellow plastic primer filler as both undercoat and topcoat. It covers extremely well and weathers well too. I have had a Hartland tanker outside for 2yrs with no sign of paint failure.
The only snag for use on the crane is that it is a "lemony" yellow as opposed to the original orangey shade.
It might be possible to change the finished appearance by using a red lead undercoat.
