How does the sound system get power, does the wagon have track pickups or something like a 9v battery inside?

I assume you've tried the obvious, that is putting a battery in and then trying it on the track? If nothing happens when track power is applied, is there a switch on it somewhere?
Most LGB "sound cars" should simply work when they get a few volts of track power, the 9v battery is there to keep the sound going when the loco is stopped (on analogue of course)....

Yes it should do, according to Zerogee? It's there to provide power to the sound card when there isn't sufficient voltage from the track....
You need volts from the track to trigger the unit, then the battery will keep it going for a short time.
there are two male jacks which go from the board into the engine socket or in the roof socket of a 3019 brake van. Not normal to be direct power pick up.
It has wheel pickups fitted and according to the blurb it is addressed as 3? When I try to use loco address I get zip?
So that implies it is DCC and has an onboard decoder... which means that the 9v battery can only be intended as a backup for when it is being used on analogue DC, because there would be no need for it under DCC - so it should, in theory, run on either DCC or DC...?
Is there a round gold sticker on the car underside, showing the code that identifies when it was made?

For dirty track the 9 volt battery will help even on DCC layouts. I changed mine to super caps with a LH7808 regulator (9 volt batteries drop down to 7 volts and still work). I run mine on DC and DCC.
