LGB 21428 RhB Ge 4/4 III Glacier on Tour
- Chrome plated body parts
- Red coating: Inkjet printing
- Printed layers clearly visible
- Coarse and grainy surface
- Preparation around the edges ?
- Sticks on the smotth chrome layer ?
- What does it look like after a few years use?
- How do clean such a surface?
- MFX/DCC decoder with real Ge 4/4 III sound instead of Ge 4/4 II with the Coop loco?
- Motor powered pantographs like before?
- Price Euro 1799,-
- First price discount spotted: Euro 1549,-

Alternatives come from Neule and Kiss Modell Bahn Service.

All very different from the known LGB quality:
- Durable paint
- Pad printing
- Clear coat

It looks that MLGB goes the cheap road in production technics.
Märklin even does unpainted H0 locomotives with inkjet printing.

That’s not the quality I want from MLGB.
MLGB uses this inkjet printing on more and more locomotives and cars.

Its weird with it being Chrome bodied and then stickers, i think this is to do with damage limitation on the chrome being impregnated into the plastic so it's less noticeable if you scratch it.
Apparently done by Audi..!
Will see when it arrives..!

Hi Phil,

The chrome plating is correct, maybe by some hungarian car manufacturer.
It remains to be seen how that works in outdoor use.
GIven that the materials like chrome and plastic are responding different at temperature differences.

The red coated parts are not stickers but inkjet printing.
That wil have hard time to stick on the smooth chrome surface.
On the shown model it was coarse and grainy.
Around the edges it was already crumbling.

Is it possibly that the loco you've seen is a preproduction model, and certain steps have/will be changed by the time the loco reaches full production?

Anything is possible at MLGB.
But I doubt that the overall quality will be better.
There are other issues too, see my posting above.

The inkjet printing maybe a real killer on this expensive and limited edition locomotive.

The same goes for the inkjet printing on the sliding wall car with the inkjet printing logo.

The ones from Neule and Kiss MBS are probably more durable.
With red paint on the plastic and professional chrome foil, like they do it at the RhB.

Chrome on plastic is a long established finish, I would expect no problems with the adhesion - paint on chrome? - we wait to see!

Looks lovely.... some interesting articles in the last two issues of Depesche, about the chroming process on this loco - apparently it was out-sourced to a company more used to doing plating on high-end car parts.

Beautiful loco Phil, Twas the first GE4/4III I saw on the RHB when we arrived at Chur and it was sitting in the adjacent platform.

I'll have to dig the mags out and check the articles (in the last two issues) to be sure, but from memory I think it's the same firm that does plating work on car parts for manufacturers like Audi and others..... that's the connection.
